Shrike: a song bird that impales its victims onto sharp objects.
Dawn light slipped through the trees canopy, but the light pooled into a clearing and sliding through the blades of grass. Sitting in the middle of the clearing, the all grass neatly trimmed away, sitting the center of the trimmed grass was a the head of a stag, its antlers twisted out, and stabbed onto the points of the antlers the body of a human woman, the body of the deer however was no where to be found, its eyes open and glassy there was something elegant about the way the body was skewered onto the points, blood ran gently down from the wounds, and had dripped into the dirt bellow, the body cavity had been cut open with a scalpel, inside the lungs had been excellently carved out and removed, and then the skin pulled back up and over. At the base of the head a ring of flowers, and in the rising sun the whole thing was a picture.
But now the crows were waking, they perched on the antlers and stabbed at the flesh tearing chunks away, she had been there no longer than two hours, but by the third, the entire place was covered over with crime scene tech, the body had been discovered by two hikers, and a man was busy chasing the crows away from the body, the air was frigid, an they all wore tightly drawn wind breakers over long sleeve shirts, already techs where opening cases and settling beside the stag head, while others began taking pictures, swabs collected blood samples and saliva from the gums. A man swiped his hands together and began to observe over the body, and was tightly followed by a broad shoulder man who glared over the body. "The Shrike" he huffed, it was the tenth victim within the past four months, each time organs removed, and sometimes hands, arms or legs. What he was doing with them exactly wasn't really a mystery but no one wanted to admit that it was cannibalism.
"Looks like it, she hasn't been dead more than three hours Agent Mathews," it was a medical examiner, he had stood up and waved away more crows who cawed in anger and fluttered away into the trees and landed in outer branches watching the commotion, waiting for another opening to swoop down and grab mouthfuls, in fact they had been pests the entire time, several chunks where missing from the body, a bothersome task at that. "The body was in one piece, until them birds came down here" he told her, and brushed off his knees. "Except for the lungs, I wont know if it was post mortem or not until I get her in the autopsy room, when I can make my full report, no doubt someone is missing this pour girl" Agent Mathews frowned in dismay and walked around the stag head once before retreating to the outer edge of the perimeter, further away from commotion and opened his cell phone, surprisingly, he had service this far out, it was a shame the girl was completely naked there were no personal effects, which would make her even harder to identify.
Mathews opened his cellphone and pulled open his contacts, number two was a man labeled simply as "Amador." the phone rang once, then twice and then picked up, a vague french accent came onto the line "Mathews" the voice did not seem amused and held a naturally quiet and ice filled tone. "Austin" Agent Mathews grinned, he did his best with Austin, who wasn't exactly the best at speech, or with people but he was a damn fine agent, he had solved three serial killer cases within the past four years, and closed several smaller cases, recovered four missing children and eased down and responsible for the safe return of hostages. He was an outstanding agent. "Listen there is a new agent coming into the office" a growl of annoyance. "i want you to wait for them, and as soon as they get their, I want your ass down at this crime scene understood?" Mathews's voice had grown sharp and Austin swallowed on the other line. "Will do" the line went dead.
Back in the office a man who stood at six food with a slender build but well fit a badge was clipped to his belt as well as a gun he was dressed nicely and complete with dark brown hair and a vibrant blue gaze, he sat down at a desk, he had earned himself an office four years ago. His fingers drummed with annoyance, he had gone through several "partners" he didn't like working with others, and he didn't play nice, and he didn't share well, he could be controlling and honestly made him a better agent, he was very distant, and most people avoided him, he liked it that way. Leaning back in his office chair all he had to do was wait, it wouldn't be long, he didn't doubt it, with a vaguely hostile gaze, he waited, he wanted to judge this new character, tapping his fingers on the desk, but other wise he remained still and quiet, watching across the bull pen for movement of a new comer.
